There is just something about home. And it is a good thing we love our home so much because we sure have been spending a lot of time there lately! We wanted to share some of our faith-based home decor ideas and how we use decorating to bring beauty into our home using the Word of God to inspire us.
In the Old Testament, it was important that they make a memorial to remember what God had done. Today, we can do the same in our home. When we have seen the goodness of the Lord we can make memorials in our home that represent what He has done for us. For example, the home we recently moved into is more than we ever dreamed of and the story behind how we got our home is so amazing. It is one of those stories where you are like, only God could have done that! So when we were decorating our living room, I knew I wanted to incorporate a scripture that would remind me every time I read it that this home was a gift from the Lord. After a couple of days of thinking about and asking the Lord what would be a good scripture to represent what he had done for us, Jeremiah 32:17 came to mind.
Jeremiah 32:17: Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! There is nothing too difficult or too wonderful for You—
Kids' Room Home Decor
When decorating your room or your kids' room try to keep in mind what you need to be reminded of at the moment. For my kids' room, we did the Fruit of the Spirit wood sign because at this age we are teaching them who they are in Christ and what is inside of them. We want them to renew their minds in Christ and know that love, joy, peace, patience, etc. are already there inside of them because of Jesus. We also design our home with Christian throw pillows to remind us of these virtues.
Dining Room Home Decor
The dining room is where we gather, share food, break bread and come together with ones we love. I love to decorate with things that are personal and welcoming in the dining room. I used our book page sign on our wall with a quote from J.R.R Tolkien in Lord of the Rings. One of our family's favorite movies is The Hobbit and this quote made us think of our home, “That house was a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness.”
We also used a vintage number 5 to represent our family of five and framed a dried leaf from one of the trees in our yard. I love seeing the framed leaf as part of our dining room decor because the trees on our land were one of the things we fell in love with when we first saw our house. All these things add not only beauty and decor but add to meaningful conversation and remind us of all of the favorite things that we love about our home and the people we love in it.
Living Room Home Decor
When choosing Christian home decor for your living room, think of how you use that space and how you can bring life and inspiration when you are spending time there. The bible is very clear about how important it is to keep the Word in front of us at all times. God’s word is full of promises, wisdom and it tells us who God is. When decorating our homes it is important to have those reminders not only for ourselves but our family and friends. It is easy to decorate with beautiful things and look at what is trending and in style, but those things quickly fade and you will always want the next big trend. Instead, choose what is lasting and will bring you life - God’s word.
Deuteronomy 11:18-20: “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. I thought of Isaiah 32:18 when decorating our living room, and how the Lord wants his people to live in secure homes, peaceful dwelling places, and in undisturbed places of rest. This home He has given us is definitely all of those things!
Bedroom Christian Home Decor
The bedroom is a wonderful place to create a sanctuary where we can recharge and renew ourselves inside and out. It is an intimate place where we think and dream and pray. Again, what is an important truth for you to remember when you are in your bedroom, or when you are with your spouse? My husband and I thought it was important to remind ourselves that The Lord is our Shepherd and is always leading and guiding us, making us lie down to rest and restoring our soul. As parents and business owners those things and promises are important to us. So to represent this, I put a painting of sheep in a pasture on our master bedroom wall. We also love this verse from Song of Solomon 3:4 for the bedroom as a reminder of Godly love in our marriage.
We love to decorate and redecorate as seasons and styles change, but most of all we love decorating with the Word of God in mind because it never changes! When we create memorials in our home of God's love and goodness, they will never cease to remind us of who He is to us.
