Let the Peace of Christ Rule
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.Colossians 3:15 (NKJV)
Have you ever been trying to make a decision and one option just doesn't sit right with you?
Maybe everything looks good on paper, but something inside is unsettled. Or perhaps a situation doesn't make much sense naturally, yet you feel completely at peace about it.In those moments, sometimes all you have to go on is this simple question:
Is there peace, or isn't there?
One verse that has helped me tremendously over the years is Colossians 3:15:"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts..."
Years ago, I heard someone explain the word rule in this verse, and it has stayed with me ever since. The Greek word Paul uses is brabeuo. In ancient times, it described an umpire or referee in an athletic competition. An umpire's job is to make the call, to determine what is in bounds and what is out of bounds. Paul uses this word to show us how the peace of God can function in our hearts.
As we turn toward the Lord in prayer and fellowship with Him, His peace can become a guidepost. Peace says, "Continue." A lack of peace says, "Slow down. Pay attention. Bring this back before the Lord."
This doesn't mean we are never challenged or that we only do things that feel comfortable. Sometimes obedience requires courage. But there is a difference between stepping out in faith with peace and pushing forward while ignoring the warning light in your heart.
I can tell you from personal experience, I have followed that peace, and I have also ignored it. The times I ignored it rarely turned out well. Thankfully, the Lord is faithful. Even when we make mistakes, He is gracious, patient, and always willing to help us. Many of us can look back and recognize situations where we knew we didn't have peace, yet moved forward anyway. Even then, He remained faithful.
Life becomes much lighter when we learn to let the peace of Christ make the call.So if you're facing a decision today, take a moment to slow down. Bring it before the Lord. Spend time with Him. Listen.
And let His peace rule.
