For He Is Good

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

As I am writing this, my husband and I are scheduled to share our testimony at church tonight. As we have been preparing and thinking back over our story, I can’t help but be thankful.

I am sure you have a story of your own, or maybe you are currently right in the middle of one.

There is something about recalling all that the Lord has done that renews something in me. It reminds me again of just how good God is.

This simple phrase, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever,” is repeated throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, it was spoken as a declaration and a reminder of who God is, and I think it serves much the same purpose for us today.

One thing is for sure, we did not deserve the outcome we received or the goodness of God we have experienced in our lives.

But that is the beautiful thing about His goodness. He is not good to us because we have been good enough. He is good because goodness is who He is.

His love for us is not something we earn by getting everything right. It is not dependent on our performance, our faithfulness, or whether we have handled every season perfectly. Our confidence is in the cross and in what Jesus accomplished when He took our place.

1 John 4:9-10 - “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

His love endures forever.

We live in a fallen world, far from what the Lord originally intended for us. Yet in His great love, He sent Jesus to be the propitiation for our sins.

That is what I love about these verses. They make it so clear that this love did not begin with us. It was not because we loved Him well enough, obeyed well enough, or somehow deserved His goodness. He loved us first.

And that love will never fade. His love is steadfast. It is never-ending. It endures forever.

Looking back at our own story, there are plenty of places where we can see our mistakes, our weakness, and the ways we could have done things differently. But woven through all of it is the faithfulness of God.

He remained faithful even when we wandered. And I think that is why remembering matters so much. When we stop and recall what God has done, we are reminding ourselves of His character and building a history in our hearts of His faithfulness.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.

Not because we are good.

Not because we have earned His kindness.

But because He is good, and His love endures forever.

Romans 5:8 -“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
