ABIDING IN CHRIST
“True guidance is not God telling us what to do next, but God drawing us to Himself, that we may walk in His life and His will naturally follows.” – inspired by Watchman Nee
I love a good topical study or a deep dive on words in the Bible. I love the prompting from the Holy Spirit to focus on a book of Scripture. But lately that all seems to fall flat. I have asked the Lord about it, and I keep getting this impression to simply choose Him. The pressing to choose Jesus all throughout the day. Turn my thoughts to Him, choose getting to know Him more instead of scrolling, choose worship in the car (I love a good pop song in the car with my daughters singing at the top of our lungs), and anytime throughout the day when I have a choice, to choose Him.
Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” This has reminded me that direction isn’t a place, it’s a Person.
In my most pivotal moments in life, I look back and see that my focus was on the Lord. It wasn’t on the path forward or on how to make things work, it was on knowing Him more deeply. Out of those times His will truly did flow naturally. Decisions and steps felt effortless, because through knowing Him I was able to walk in the life I live through Him.
We are called to abide in Jesus, and as Christians we are found in Him. John 15:4–5 says, “Abide in me, and I in you… apart from me you can do nothing.” Our spirits come alive when we give our lives to Christ, so when we choose Him we are feeding that new life to grow in every area of our being. I have certainly been guilty of trying to do things in my own strength, but it is in fellowship with Him that I find my strength.
So I am not saying that focusing on a topic in the Bible or studying specific words is not getting to know Christ more. On the contrary, I think it helps us know more about His character and who He is. But sometimes He draws us to simply receive from Him, to draw close and be still in His presence.
Colossians 2:6–7 – “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
He is for us, never wavering in His love, drawing us every day with His faithfulness. May we lean into that love daily.
